Lagos Schools Reopen On Monday As Kano Orders Reduction Of 3rd Term Fees

LAGOS OCTOBER 29TH (NEWSRANGERS)-The Lagos State Government has approved the re-opening of all classes in public and private schools across the state from next week Monday, November 2, 2020.

Boarders in public schools are to resume on Sunday, November 1.

Schools in the state were shut on October 19, 2020 following safety concerns after hoodlums hijacked the #ENDSARS violence.

Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, said in a statement issued on Thursday: “This has been an unprecedented year with the recent happenings that have regrettably led to frequent closure of schools with attendant learning disruptions faced by all children.

“We pray and hope that there will be no more disruptions in the academic calendar. However, the State Government will always regard the safety of pupils/students, parents and all staff as a matter of priority.

“We recommend that when schools resume on Monday, teaching and learning should continue unhindered till the end of the term.”

In a related development, the Kano State Government has urged proprietors of private schools in the state to reduce school fees by 25 and 30 percent for the 2019/2020 third term academic session.

The state’s Commissioner for Education, Sanusi Kiru, gave the directive on Thursday via a statement signed by Aliyu Yusuf, the Public Relations Officer of the ministry.

Kiru said the ministry was considering cancellation of the Third Term session if the school proprietors remained adamant to reduce the fees.

He said the measure was imperative in view of the economic realities occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.

His words: “Two parallel ad-hoc committees were constituted to discuss with proprietors of the schools on the downward review of the fees as done in some states.

“Failure to do so; the ministry will cancel the Third Term session, and the academic calendar will commence with a new session in January 2021.

“Proprietors of private schools should appreciate the support they enjoyed from the state government and extend the same gesture to the good people of the state.”

The Commissioner said the ministry had fixed Nov.1, the dateline for the schools to comply, warning that: “the ministry will be left with no option than to take such a revolutionary decision in the public interest.”
