Social Media Agog As Okonjo- Iweala Bags US Award Amid WTO Contention
LAGOS NOVEMBER 18TH (NEWSRANGERS)-Nigerians on micro-bloging site, Twitter now believe the coast is clear for the United States to endorse former Nigerian Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala, as Director General of the World Trade Organisation after she was conferred winner of the 2020 International Service Award of the World Affairs Councils of America.
Iweala, who is also chair of Gavi the Vaccine Alliance, said on twitter, “Honored to win the 2020 International Service Award of the World Affairs Councils of America. Thank You @WACAmerica for bringing the world to America through dialogue,debate&action! #COVID19 shows us how interconnected the world is & how important it is to be each other’s keeper.”
The award comes amid Washington’s refusal to endorse the two- time former finance minister as DG of the WTO.
The US favours the South Korean, Yoo Myung-hee, saying she is in best position to reform the WTO.
The 164 members of the trade bloc, including the European Union, had endorsed Iweala.
But with the projected victory of Joe Biden over incumbent president Donald Trump in the recently concluded US election, many believe their might be a change of heart in Washington.
With the new award by the World Affairs Councils of America, Nigerians on twitter believe the US is already rethinking its opposition to Nigeria’s Okonjo- Iweala.
THE WHISTLER had reported that the Federal Government was making neccessary effort to lobby Washington to give the vote needed to reach a concensus for the emergence of Iweala as the first female and first African DG of the largest trade bloc.
Reacting to to the development on Twitter, Peter Agboro said “Big congrats to a legend of our time and generation. More congrats awaits you when you win the position of WTO….no one deserves that position better than you do. You will surely bring the jinx.”
