United Arab Emirates Reopens Its Embassy In Syria After Six Years

LAGOS DECEMBER 28TH (NEWSRANGERS)-The United Arab Emirates has reopened its embassy in Syria. Recently, UAE is promoting diplomacy to bring peace in the Middle East. Thus, this is being considered as a major step for the country that was funding the rebels to fight the president Bashar al-Assad.
The UAE has officially said that this step is to strengthen the sovereignty and independence of the country and prevent regional interference in Syrian affairs. This is a direct reference to Iran which took an important part in the war by supporting President Assad.
As the peace is slowly returning to the war-torn country, the United Arab Emirates is trying to help Syria in its rehabilitation efforts. The UAE Minister of State for foreign affairs Anwar Gargash has tweeted that the country firmly believed that Arab presence in Syria is imperative at this point in time.
The reopening of the embassy has some other underlying meaning as well. Almost seven years ago, the country has been suspended from the Arab league. This reopening of this embassy means, that UAE wants to bring Syria back to the Arab league. Gargash admitted to the media that it was a mistake to boot Syria out of the league. The 22 member countries of the league are also feeling in the same way though nothing has been finalized yet. Gargash said to the news channels that Syrian admission will require the consensus of all Arab countries.
Robert Ford, who was the US ambassador to Syria when the uprising started in 2011, said that through this step UAE is hoping to establish a diplomatic and financial relationship with Syria. In this way, it can shun the Shiite-led opponent Iran. He pointed out that Arab has a thriving private sector which can help Syria with the massive construction work.
This reopening of the UAE embassy also denotes that the Syrian President has recovered from the war, which claimed the lives of 500,000 Syrians, unscathed.
