LAGOS MAY 23RD (NEWSRANGERS)-Director of Sea Empowerment And Research Centre Limited, Francis Uchechukwu Aneziechukwu has commended President Muhammadu Buhari  for minimizing the incidents of piracy in the Gulf Guinea by signing of the suppression of piracy  and other maritime related bill act into law in 2019.

He  equally commended Nigeria Maritime And Safety Agency (NIMASA) for the  implementation of the bill.

Aneziechukwu who made the commendation while addressing journalists  during  Maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria (MAJAN)  first quarter review of maritime industry activities in Nigeria held NAGAF Village, Apapa, Lagos on Thursday stated that the signing  of the bill and implementation had reduced activities piracy in the Gulf of Guinea drastically.

According to him, “International Marritime Bureau  global  piracy incident report on the Gulf of Guinea is very encouraging. In 2019, 62 incidents of piracy was recorded in the first quarter. In 2020,  47  incidents of piracy  was recorded in the first quarter, while in 2021,  38 incidents of piracy was recorded in the first quarter.  This report is a revelation that the signing of the suppression of piracy  and other maritime related bill act into law in 2019 by President Buhari and its implementation by NIMASA had reduced the crime rate on international waterways.”

He advised  that Nigeria must inculcate maritime researchers into its integrated blue economy strategies and road maps  because the sweeping continental vision for an  African blue economy envisaged by the 2050 AIM Strategy remains far from realization with the initial time frames for implementation behind schedule.

“First, Nigeria has limited sea research institution/centres and infrastructures.  Coastal protection safety both of which  are essential for establishing  a  viable blue economy  and curb illegal maritime activities.

“One-fifth  of the world’s fisheries  catch is estimated  to  have originated  from illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in Africa,” he disclosed.
