Confusion In Reps Session Over June 12

LAGOS JUNE 7TH (NEWSRANGERS)-The session of the House of Representatives on Thursday became rowdy as members disagreed over the declaration of June 12 as new Democracy Day by President Muhammadu Buhari.
While some feel the President was right and has the power to so declare the June 12 as Democracy Day, others are of the view that he does not.
Buhari had on Wednesday moved the celebration of the country’s Democracy Day from May 29 every year to June 12 with effect from next year.
June 12, 1993 is believed to be a watershed in the country’s history as what was considered to be the freest and fairest presidential election was held on that day.
The election, won by late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, was annulled by the regime of Military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.
As at press time, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, was trying to bring the situation under control.
