Flood Kills 11, Submerges Houses, Farms In Niger State

LAGOS JULY 10TH (NEWSRANGERS)-Eleven people have died in flooding after heavy rains in Suleja and Tafa council areas of Niger state.
Nine people died in Checheniya, one at Kuspa area of same town while one other died at Ayin-Nassarrawa in Tafa local government area of the state and another in the same local government area.
The State Emergency Management Agency officials have so far recovered eight bodies, and continue searching for more.
Several houses were destroyed in five hours of downpour which started Saturday night until Sunday morning.
Undisclosed numbers of livestock were also killed even as 100 of hectares of farms were submerged in the two local government areas.
NSEMA Director General, Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmed Inga who confirmed the incident disclosed that the agency’s search and rescue operation and volunteers were at the sites of the disasters.
The director general said the casualties could be more as according to accounts by the natives, so many people were still missing even as he described the incident as national tragedy.
“As I am talking to you now the search and rescue operation is going; initially we thought it was eight people who lost their lives in Suleja but now it has increased to ten and we have another one from Tafa”, he said.
He stated further that the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed Ketso, led government officials for an on the spot assessment visits to the troubled spots on the directive of Governor Abubakar Sani Bello.
He said medical personnel have also been drafted to the areas to provide emergency support for those in urgent needs of medical attention, while relief materials were being moved to cushion the effect of the disaster.
He said Agency officials were liaising with traditional rulers and ward leaders for an authentic list of those affected.
