Covid-19 Hits French President, Emmanuel Macron

LAGOS DECEMBER 17TH (NEWSRANGERS)-French President Emmanuel Macron has tested positive for coronavirus after a week in which he held a series of meetings with some of Europe’s most senior leaders.

The news has prompted Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez, who met Macron on Monday, to suspend all his public activities and enter self-isolation.

A statement said Macron, 42, had experienced symptoms and had taken a test “as soon as the first symptoms appeared”.

He will now enter a seven-day quarantine until December 24.

Macron is the latest in a string of world leaders – including Boris Johnson – to test positive for the virus.

The diagnosis comes just days after Macron hosted prime minister Pedro Sánchez at the Élysee Palace.

Sánchez’s office has now confirmed he will also enter a seven-day quarantine.

Footage from the meeting showed both leaders wore masks and that they did not shake hands.

Sánchez, whose wife caught coronavirus near the start of the pandemic in March, will now be tested.

Macron also hosted Portuguese prime minister António Costa in Paris yesterday.

A statement from Macron’s office read: “The President of the Republic has been diagnosed positive for Covid-19 today.

“This diagnosis was made following an PCR test performed at the onset of the first symptoms.”

Pictures from just the last week show Macron also meeting with European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, European council president Charles Michel, Swedish prime minister Stefan Lofven, Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán, and Polish prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

Michel has also announced that he will enter self-isolation, as have French prime minister Jean Castex and parliamentary speaker Richard Ferrand.

Macron’s wife, Brigitte Macron, 67, is also self-isolating, though has not shown any symptoms.

Macron had been due to visit Lebanon between December 22 and 23, but the Élysee has confirmed that the trip will not go ahead.

The diagnosis also comes just four days ahead of his 43rd birthday on December 21.
