Ocean Surge Sacks Residents From Ondo Community

LAGOS NOVEMBER 12TH NEWSRANGERS))-Following the incursion of the Atlantic Ocean that has ravaged Ayetoro in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, which started few weeks ago, many residents of the coastal town have fled the community.

The ocean has wreaked havoc on the community, destroying properties worth millions of naira, while many residents were rendered homeless.

Some residents of the community have appealed to the government and intervention agencies to come to their rescue so that the sea would not wipe away the entire community.

The secretary general of the community, Chief Dele Kudehinbu, who commented on the development, said the community had lost almost 20 kilometres of its land to the sea.

Kudehinbu disclosed that hundreds of residents of the community had relocated to some other towns in the local government.

He said, “In 2006, the community had 26,000 residents but now, the population has been depleted to 5,000 due to incessant sea incursions into the community which had forced many residents to relocate.

“Many places we are calling sea today were once bare ground, where we used to play football in those days. It was about 20 kilometres before the sea. The incursion did not start today, it started a long time ago, so the government should assist us find solution to the problem,” he said.

Similarly, a teacher in Ayetoro Community Primary School, who did not want his name in print, stated that the primary school had been totally washed away. He said out of over 400 pupils in  the school, only 178 resumed after the three weeks emergency holiday declared by the state government.

He added that the primary school was currently making use of the dilapidated technical college, inside which a major part of its roof had gone off and the environment was not conducive for learning and teaching.

He said, “Two classes were merged together, primary one and two are in the same class. KG one and two are in the same class. If we refuse to do it that way, the children will stay at home.”
