LAGOS OCTOBER 14TH (NEWSRANGERS)-A former international soccer star, George Weah, took an early lead in Liberia’s presidential election yesterday as the nation began releasing provisional results. With 20 candidates in the race, observers expect a run-off election.
The National Election Commission (NEC) data showed Weah, a former European and world footballer of the year, ahead in 14 of Liberia’s 15 counties while Vice President Joseph Boakai led in his home county, Lofa.
Commission Chairman Jerome Korkoya warned that the early results represented a small portion of the total vote and cautioned supporters against declaring victory.
A candidate needs more than 50 percent of the votes for outright victory, and if no-one achieves that, a second round will be held in November.
