Democracy Day: Twitter Boss, Jack Dorsey Celebrates, Tweets Nigerian Flag

LAGOS JUNE 13TH (NEWSRANGERS)-Chief executive officer of Twitter Jack Dorsey has tweeted the Nigerian flag in solidarity with the West African country on its Democracy Day celebration.

Mr Dorsey’s tweet on Saturday attracted thousands of retweets in the country where Twitter has been suspended by the authorities, but is still being accessed by many through virtual private networks.

His tweet comes amid protests in different parts of the country against bad governance.

Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw and lawyer Ayo Sogunro are some of those who have hailed the Twitter boss for his tweet.

“In 2019, I mocked people who went to meet-and-greet Jack when he visited Nigeria. I’m like that: I hate the way we patronise rich white men in Africa. But if I meet Jack today, I will thank him for not rolling over for the Nigerian govt at the expense of the people. #KeepitOn,” Mr Sogunro tweeted.

Dorsey visited Nigeria for the first time in 2019. He also visited Ghana and Ethiopia in his first trip to Africa.

The company is set to establish its Africa office in Ghana.

Dorsey has not been in the good books of the Nigerian government since last October over an allegation that he was complicit in the promotion of the #EndSARS protests that ended in the destruction of lives and billions of property in Nigeria.

After Twitter deleted a post by President Muhammadu Buhari last week for violating its rules, Buhari suspended Twitter citing the “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”
