Legislative Aides Protest, Disrupt NASS’s Activities Over Non-Payment Of N5bn Allowances
LAGOS OCTOBER 9TH (NEWSRANGERS)-A number of legislative aides, on Tuesday trooped out en masses to protest the non-payment of their allowances of N5.8bn, disrupting the activities of the National Assembly which was billed to resume Today.
The protesters were seen at the lobby of the NASS complex dressed in black, expressing their grievances to the leadership of the Senate and House of Representatives chambers to accede to their requests.
However, they were prevented from blocking the entrances to the chambers to allow lawmakers access the floors for plenary session.
The protesters also threatened to shut down the National Assembly if their allowances were not paid before resumption.
Mr. Sam Melaye, leader of the aggrieved employees said that “the entitlements must be paid before resumption by the lawmakers later this month, failure of which would lead to the shut down of the National Assembly.”
He lamented that their duty tour and training allowances have not been paid to any one of them within the last three years, which he put at N2 billion and N3 billion respectively.
